Muladhara treatment at Four Seasons, Bali

I arrived at the Four Seasons, Sayan towards the end of my week long stint in Bali. I was tired, had aching muscles from long walks and treks and needed to just unwind. Naturally, Four Seasons was the perfect fit as almost nothing beats the resorts amenities and facilities designed to help you relax.

Louise Anderson, Director of Spa Operations had booked the perfect ritual that would give me 120 minutes of pure, unadulterated bliss and leave me feeling more connected, grounded to mother earth. The balinese believe in the inextricable link between the body and mind and in the energy exchange exchanges with us and the environment around us. It becomes extremely important to perform rituals that help mitigate negativity, improve our connection with the earth and help unleash our full potential.

Our body consists of 7 different chakras that start at the temple (forehead) and end near the end of the spine. The Muladhara is your root chakra, the 7th chakra which is located at the base of your tailbone (coccyx). Considered the foundation of the body and origin of the nadis, the muladhara is like an achor that helps ground you and make you feel secure. Traditionally, the balinese perform rituals twice a month with the help of a priest to open the channels, balance the chakras and stabilise the muladhara. Routine cleansing of the chakras helps stabilise the bond between the mind and body, harmonise energies and improve health and immune functions. Weary travellers, workaholics and those going through a particularly stressful period in their lives, benefit greatly from the treatment.

I was no stranger to massages, regular ayurvedic treatments, aura cleansing but hadn’t a clue what to expect from my treatment. The ritual began with a prayer and traditional foot soak followed by gentle exfoliation with himalayan pink salt scrub to slough away dead skin. I change into my robe and sit on a stool and wait for further instructions. ” We will now commence the smoking”, she says and she can tell at this point I’m really confused. It’s a tad uncomfortable at first to watch smoke coming out of the stool and I worry I might burn myself in the process. All my worries are now gone with a ridiculously good head and shoulder massage while I’m still seated.

The next bit feels a little bit like EFT (emotional freedom technique) but strange nonetheless. She teaches me how to heal myself with just a few taps. We begin with a tibetan technique that incorporates light-medium taps on various meridians to open up the body to receive healing. Once she shows me how its done, I have to repeat it once more to make sure I’ve learnt it right.

We move into another room with a bed for the traditional kunye massage. The tibetan massage is very effective in alleviating stress and soreness, helps fix neurological problems and improves blood circulation. The divine, sweet smelling patchouli and jatamani oils provide nourishment to dull, dehydrated skin and a few moments later- I can barely keep my eyes open. She places rose quartz crystal hearts to my spine to accelerate healing. I’ve been complaining of a sore neck and shoulder because of my desk job and crazy travelling and to alleviate the sprain- she strategically places a warm poultice which brings instant relief. The ritual finishes with chanting and strong vibrations from the tibetan singing bowls that stimulate brain waves, balance and harmonise the body. As I listen intently to the sound of the bowls, the music relaxes me and I can literally feel all my stress melting away and leaving my body.

Health practitioners and healers all over the world have seen the positive effects of the tibetan healing bowls. The vibration from the bowls helps bring about a state of harmony, fighting chronic stress and disease and allowing the body to heal itself.

I remember noting how I felt post the treatment and told my husband that I felt like I was floating on a cloud. My worries were lifted and my shoulders were no longer tense and stressed. I didn’t do very much at all that evening but decided to retire early and catch up on my sleep. Its been a fortnight since my trip to magical Bali and I can’t help but rave about this treatment. I highly recommend the ‘muladhara’ ritual to anyone and everyone- looking for a way to unleash your potential and feel more connected to mother earth. Don’t just take my word for it- don’t leave Bali without a session at the Four Seasons Resort & Spa. Note – this treatment is available at both properties in Bali (Jimbaran and Sayan) so you’ll have no excuse to pass up on this opportunity.

Special thanks to the spa team at the Four Seasons at Sayan especially Amanda Zahra & Adrian Pardede for organising my itinerary and stay. Spa Director-Louise Anderson deserves special mention for being fabulous and curating such a lovely experience I loved talking to you about your time in India and at Ananda Spa and absolutely cannot wait to visit again.
